Washington, D.C. – 17°F overnight lows are freezing pipes and damaging early vegetation through Sunday morning, as a sharp cold snap grips the region.
Temperatures across Maryland, northern Virginia, and the District will remain well below seasonal norms through the weekend, with daytime highs ranging from the upper 30s to low 50s Saturday and Sunday. Overnight lows will drop into the upper teens and 20s, creating repeated freeze conditions that increase the risk of pipe damage and harm to early spring plants.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, high pressure will keep conditions dry and mostly sunny through Sunday, but the colder air mass will persist, especially during overnight and early morning hours. Areas including Baltimore, Arlington, Alexandria, and Frederick will see the coldest readings before sunrise both mornings.
Travel impacts are expected to be limited during the day, but early morning commuters could encounter patchy frost or icy spots on bridges and untreated roads, particularly along I-95, I-495, and I-66 corridors.
Residents should protect exposed pipes, bring sensitive plants indoors, and use caution during early travel hours when surfaces may be slick.
Temperatures begin a steady rebound by Monday, with highs climbing into the 50s and then surging into the 60s and even 70s by Tuesday as warmer air moves in from the southwest.
