Washington, DC – A refreshing shift is on the way tonight as a backdoor cold front sweeps across the Mid-Atlantic, dropping temperatures and ushering in drier air. Residents across Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia will notice a cooler night with lows dipping into the 40s and 50s.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, areas west of Interstate 81 will see the coldest conditions, with temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s. East of I-81, lows will settle in the mid-50s to low 60s. An isolated shower or sprinkle may linger south of I-66 this evening, but skies will clear overnight as humidity drops.

Cumberland is forecast to reach the upper 40s, while Hagerstown and Martinsburg could bottom out near 50. Baltimore and Washington, DC, will remain milder in the mid-50s, while Harrisonburg and Staunton dip into the low 50s. Commuters Wednesday morning can expect crisp, clear conditions—ideal for outdoor activities after several damp days.

The NWS advises residents to prepare for the cooler start by layering up in the morning, especially in valleys and rural areas prone to faster cooling.

Sunshine and pleasant fall weather return Wednesday, with highs climbing back into the 70s.
