BALTIMORE/WASHINGTON – The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST Tuesday for portions of northern and north-central Maryland and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, marking the first widespread winter event of the season.

Snow will begin to spread into the region after midnight Monday night, starting as all snow before gradually mixing with sleet and freezing rain toward daybreak. Areas near and north of the Mason-Dixon Line — including Hagerstown, Westminster, and northern Frederick County — could remain mostly snow through much of the event, while locations farther south toward Leesburg and Martinsburg will likely see more mixed precipitation.

Expected accumulations:

  • Snow/Sleet: 1–2 inches common, locally up to 4 inches near the Mason-Dixon Line and elevated ridges like Parr’s Ridge.
  • Ice: Up to 0.10 inch possible, creating slick spots on untreated surfaces.

Hazardous travel is expected during the Tuesday morning commute, particularly between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m., when precipitation is heaviest and temperatures remain below freezing. Road conditions should gradually improve by late morning as temperatures rise and precipitation changes to rain south of I-70 and U.S. 50.
