Cumberland, Md. – Residents across western Maryland and eastern West Virginia should prepare for rapidly changing conditions as a Tornado Watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, Tornado Watch 348 has been extended to include Allegany and Garrett counties in Maryland, as well as Mineral County in West Virginia. The watch warns of the potential for tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail through early evening.
Communities under the alert include Cumberland, Frostburg, Oakland, Keyser, and Fort Ashby. Strong thunderstorms are expected to intensify along the higher elevations, especially near the I-68 corridor and U.S. Route 50. Outdoor activities should be postponed, and residents are urged to monitor weather apps or NOAA radio for immediate warnings.
Power outages and tree damage are possible if storms strengthen. Emergency officials advise having a shelter plan in place and charging mobile devices in case of outages. This system follows a pattern of late spring instability typical of the region.
The Tornado Watch remains active until 8 p.m., and additional advisories may follow if storm development continues.
