Washington, DC – Strong winds are sweeping through the Mid-Atlantic Tuesday, with gusts up to 50 mph expected to continue through 8 p.m., prompting a widespread wind advisory across Maryland, Virginia, and the District.

According to the National Weather Service, west winds between 15 to 25 mph with peak gusts nearing 50 mph are impacting both urban and rural communities from central Maryland to the Virginia highlands. The advisory, issued late Tuesday morning, covers the greater Washington, DC metro area, including Montgomery, Prince George’s, Loudoun, and Fairfax counties.

Residents should expect unsecured outdoor objects to be displaced, tree limbs to fall, and isolated power outages to occur. High-profile vehicles, such as box trucks and buses, may struggle with control on exposed highways, particularly along I-95 and I-66 corridors.

In addition to the DC region, mountainous and panhandle areas of West Virginia, including Berkeley and Jefferson counties, are also under advisory. These zones may experience similar hazards through the evening.

Officials urge residents to secure patio furniture, trash bins, and other outdoor items. Drivers should exercise caution, especially during peak commuting hours. While no severe damage is currently reported, emergency crews are prepared to respond to downed trees or power lines.
