Staunton, Va. – Gardeners and drivers across Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley are on alert tonight, as plummeting temperatures trigger a Frost Advisory until 8 a.m. Monday. Lows will tumble into the mid-30s in Staunton, Harrisonburg, and surrounding areas, threatening sensitive crops just as the growing season ramps up.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, high pressure is clearing skies and calming winds across the region, setting the stage for widespread chilly conditions. The advisory stretches along the I-81 corridor, from Monterey through Franklin, Luray, and parts of Augusta and Rockingham counties, where overnight lows could reach 34°F to 37°F.

In affected communities, residents are urged to cover outdoor plants, bring sensitive potted flowers inside, and limit irrigation that might worsen frost damage. Farmers and vineyard owners should take extra precautions to shield early crops. Drivers may encounter patchy frost on rural roads, especially before sunrise.

While Baltimore and Washington, D.C. will remain milder—staying above 45°F—western Maryland and northwestern Virginia will feel the sharpest chill. This frost risk arrives earlier than some recent years, catching many gardeners off guard.

The Frost Advisory remains in effect through 8 a.m. Monday, with additional advisories possible if clear, cold nights persist. Stay tuned for updates as growing season risks continue.
