Guntersville, AL – A man was fatally shot Sunday after allegedly presenting a weapon during a joint child sex predator operation in Marshall County, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
The incident occurred November 23 in the 500 block of Warrenton Shores Road in Guntersville when deputies with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Guntersville Police Department attempted to arrest a suspect identified as Jack Andrew Smiley, 27, of Muncie, Indiana.
According to ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), Smiley allegedly resisted arrest by attempting to flee and ultimately displayed a weapon. Deputies and officers opened fire, fatally wounding Smiley. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two officers sustained minor injuries during the confrontation and were treated at the scene, investigators said.
ALEA reported that its SBI division has launched a full investigation at the request of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. Once complete, findings will be turned over to the Marshall County District Attorney’s Office for review.
