Marquette, Michigan – Scattered thunderstorms could batter Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Tuesday afternoon, with strong winds, large hail, and flash flooding possible from Ironwood to Marquette.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a slow-moving front is triggering storms across the western and central U.P., with the greatest threat for severe weather between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. EDT. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for the region, highlighting concerns over damaging winds, frequent lightning, and localized flooding.

Cities under the strongest threat include Ashland, Ironwood, Houghton, and Marquette, especially along U.S. Route 2 and M-28. The NWS warns that the most intense cells could produce hail greater than 1 inch in diameter and isolated wind gusts over 60 mph. Flash flooding may occur in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Residents are urged to enable emergency alerts, secure loose outdoor items, and seek shelter if warnings are issued. Power outages are possible during peak storm hours.

Storm activity is expected to gradually weaken overnight, but more unsettled weather is possible later this week. Stay tuned for further updates from the NWS.
