Marquette, Michigan – Snow-covered roads are slowing travel across Upper Michigan this morning, with several inches of additional accumulation expected before conditions improve later today.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of the western and central Upper Peninsula until 7 p.m. EST Saturday, while Dickinson and Menominee counties remain under advisory until noon CST. Most areas will pick up an additional 2 to 5 inches of snow, with the highest totals over Keweenaw, northern Houghton and Baraga counties.
Communities including Houghton, Hancock and Copper Harbor could see 3 to 5 inches by evening. Marquette, Gwinn, Escanaba and Munising are likely to receive 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts in western Alger County. In Dickinson and Menominee counties, up to 3 inches is expected before snowfall tapers by midday.
Road commissions report slick stretches on US-41, M-28 and secondary highways, especially in higher terrain and near Lake Superior where bursts of snow may briefly reduce visibility. Drivers should slow down, allow extra braking distance and prepare for changing conditions through the afternoon.
Snow gradually diminishes west to east later today, but untreated roads may remain icy into the evening commute. Additional advisories could be issued if bands redevelop off Lake Superior.
