Marquette, Michigan — A winter storm could bring several inches of snow across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula beginning late Monday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, an initial round of light snow is expected late Monday night into Tuesday morning, followed by a brief break during the day Tuesday.

Forecasters say another round of light to moderate snow is expected Tuesday evening through Wednesday, which could produce the highest snowfall totals across the region.

Confidence is increasing that at least a few inches of snow will fall across much of the Upper Peninsula by Wednesday evening, with some areas seeing 4 inches or more.

Current outlooks show the highest chances for 4 inches or greater snowfall in communities including Marquette, Munising, Ishpeming, Houghton and Grand Marais between 2 a.m. Tuesday and 8 p.m. Wednesday.

However, meteorologists say final snowfall totals could still change depending on small shifts in the storm’s track and localized lake and terrain effects, which often influence snow patterns across the region.

The winter weather follows a relatively mild start to the week, with temperatures reaching the 40s and 50s Monday afternoon before colder air moves in with the storm system.

Drivers across the Upper Peninsula should prepare for periods of reduced visibility and snow-covered roads, particularly during the heavier snow Tuesday night and Wednesday.

For commuters, students and overnight workers, snow may affect late-night travel Tuesday and Wednesday morning commutes across the region.
