MARQUETTE, Mich. – A shift toward cooler, wetter fall weather begins late this week across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, as mild days give way to fog, drizzle, and increasing chances for lake effect rain showers along Lake Superior by the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, fog will form overnight into Thursday morning, particularly in the interior west and central U.P., where lows will drop into the upper 20s and low 30s. The lakeshore will remain a few degrees warmer, near 40.

Thursday will bring a brief break of sunshine before clouds thicken Friday ahead of a weak cold front. Light to moderate rain is expected Friday into early Saturday, transitioning to lake effect showers Saturday afternoon and evening as cooler northwest winds sweep across Lake Superior.

Daytime highs will fall from the lower 50s Thursday to the mid-40s by the weekend, with lows trending near freezing. Travelers along U.S. 41 and M-28 should be alert for reduced visibility in fog and slick roads from light rain or drizzle, especially near the Keweenaw and Marquette County hills.

Forecasters say Sunday will clear out briefly, bringing sunshine but lingering chill before another weak system approaches early next week.
