Marquette, Mich. – Swimmers along Lake Superior’s shoreline face life-threatening conditions today as dangerous waves and strong rip currents impact beaches in Marquette and Alger counties. The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement, in effect through this evening, warning residents and visitors to stay out of the water.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, high wave action combined with strong currents will create extremely unsafe swimming conditions, particularly at popular recreation spots. Hazardous areas include Middle Bay north of Presque Isle and Little Presque Isle in Marquette County, along with the Au Train River mouth, exposed sections of Grand Marais Harbor, and stretches of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Alger County.
Officials warn that waves arriving in rapid succession can quickly overwhelm swimmers, and past rescues and fatalities have occurred under similar conditions. Safety agencies advise staying onshore, avoiding piers, and keeping a close watch on children and pets near the water.
The beach hazard risk remains in effect until late Monday evening, with updates expected if conditions persist.
