Marquette, Michigan – Temperatures across the Upper Peninsula are expected to fall quickly into the 20s this evening, with overnight lows dropping into the teens in parts of the interior, creating conditions favorable for patchy dense freezing fog.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, the highest risk for dense fog will be across the interior west, where light winds and lingering moisture could allow visibility to drop significantly at times. Some areas may see fog become locally dense late tonight.

As temperatures fall to between 10 and 20 degrees, any remaining snowmelt on roadways may refreeze. Officials say slippery spots are possible, particularly on untreated roads, bridges and overpasses along US-41, M-28 and M-35.

Patchy dense fog combined with freezing conditions could reduce visibility and create slick travel during late-night and early-morning hours. Motorists traveling overnight or during the early commute should be prepared for changing conditions, especially in low-lying areas and rural stretches where fog tends to develop first.

The National Weather Service notes that fog coverage may vary significantly from one location to another. While not all communities will experience dense fog, localized reductions in visibility could occur quickly.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down if encountering fog, use low-beam headlights and allow extra stopping distance. Students and early-shift workers in interior counties may experience reduced visibility before sunrise.

Conditions are expected to improve after daybreak as temperatures gradually rise and fog dissipates.
