Marquette, MI – A strong lake effect snow band is expected to develop over the Keweenaw Peninsula tonight, bringing periods of heavy, rapidly accumulating snow, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette. Forecasters say snowfall rates of 0.5 to 1 inch per hour will be possible, especially in areas where the band remains stationary for extended periods.

The greatest uncertainty remains the exact placement of the band, which will determine how long it stays over land and how much snow specific communities receive. According to the NWS, the heaviest totals are most likely north and west of US-41 near Eagle Harbor, where localized higher amounts may accumulate if the band lingers.

A low-end scenario indicates most of the region could see at least 1–2 inches, while a high-end scenario suggests a smaller 10% chance of substantially higher totals in the core of the band.

Potential impacts include quickly snow-covered roads, visibility dropping to ¼ mile or less, and difficult travel along highways including US-41, M-26, and routes between Copper Harbor, Eagle River, and Calumet.

The rest of the Upper Peninsula will remain mostly quiet tonight with partly cloudy skies and low temperatures ranging from the single digits to the mid-teens, coldest in the interior west and central U.P.

Drivers in the Keweenaw should monitor conditions closely tonight, as snow bands may shift rapidly, creating sudden changes in visibility and road conditions.
