MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Upper Peninsula wakes under a calm, frosty sky this morning — a deceptive calm before another November pattern shift. A quiet Friday will give way to a gusty weekend as rain mixes with snow and temperatures tumble across western and central Upper Michigan.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, Friday stays mostly sunny and mild for mid-November, with highs near 48°F and southwest winds up to 20 mph. It’s a brief window for travel or outdoor plans before clouds thicken and moisture moves in Friday night. Showers become likely into Saturday afternoon as temperatures rise near 51°F — but don’t expect it to stay rain for long.

By Saturday night, colder air rushing off Lake Superior will drive a rain-to-snow changeover, with gusts possibly reaching 40 mph along the Keweenaw Peninsula and the Lake Superior shoreline. The NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook warns of potential black ice on untreated roads where melting snow refreezes. Conditions could turn slick, especially on secondary roads and elevated surfaces through early Sunday morning.

Sunday remains blustery and cold, with scattered lake-effect snow showers and highs only near 38°F. The chill continues into early next week, with lows in the upper 20s and occasional flurries north of Ishpeming and Munising.

Drivers should prepare for wet-to-icy transitions and limited visibility along U.S. 41 and M-28 late Saturday through early Sunday. After all, winter’s early rehearsal is here — and it’s not leaving quietly.
