Marquette, Michigan – Widespread snow is expected to continue across the Marquette area through Saturday night, with accumulating snowfall and hazardous travel conditions likely at times, according to the National Weather Service office in Marquette.

Forecasters say snow began spreading west to east early Saturday morning and will persist through the day and evening. By 7 a.m. Sunday, snowfall totals around Marquette are forecast to range from 3 to 6 inches, though amounts could vary significantly over short distances.

The National Weather Service highlighted increased uncertainty in the central Upper Peninsula, where a heavier snowband may set up this afternoon and evening. If this band develops over Marquette or nearby areas, snowfall rates could increase quickly, leading to sharply higher totals. Officials warned that hazardous travel is likely along U.S. Highway 41, particularly from Delta County northward through Marquette and Alger counties.

As the system evolves tonight, widespread snow is expected to transition into a lake-effect and lake-enhanced snow pattern, especially across the north wind snowbelts and higher terrain. This transition may prolong snowfall in some locations even after the broader system exits.

In addition to accumulating snow, northerly winds will strengthen tonight into Sunday morning, creating areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility. These conditions may further complicate travel on exposed roadways and rural highways.

For commuters, students, and weekend travelers in the Marquette area, the most significant impacts are expected Saturday afternoon through early Sunday, when snowfall rates, wind, and visibility issues may overlap. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and briefings at weather.gov/mqt, as snowfall placement and totals may shift as the event unfolds.
