Residents of Marquette and surrounding areas should prepare for severe thunderstorms expected this afternoon. The strongest storms are likely to bring damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning. These storms are forecasted to develop between 2 PM and 8 PM EDT, with the highest risk in south-central and eastern Upper Michigan.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette, these storms could cause significant damage, especially with the possibility of hail and strong winds. Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, stay indoors during the storms, and monitor local weather updates for further warnings.

Additionally, the NWS has issued a high swim risk for Marquette and Alger County beaches, including dangerous locations like McCarty’s Cove and Au Train Bay. Strong winds and large waves are creating hazardous conditions along Lake Superior’s shorelines. Swimmers should stay out of the water and avoid piers and break walls to prevent accidents.
