Marquette, Mich. – Heavy rain and thunderstorms will spread across Upper Michigan tonight and continue through Tuesday, raising concerns for localized flooding in low-lying areas and on roadways.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a warm front lifting into the region tonight will be followed by a slow-moving cold front on Tuesday. These systems will fuel periods of rain and storms, some of which may repeatedly track over the same locations. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected in most areas, though isolated pockets in the western U.P. could see as much as 3 to 5 inches, creating a flash flood risk.
Communities from Ironwood to Houghton and Marquette could experience ponding on roads, while rural routes and smaller streams in the western U.P. are most at risk for flooding. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads and keep phones charged in case of power outages during thunderstorms.
The heaviest rain is expected tonight into Tuesday morning, with showers lingering through the day. Additional weather alerts remain possible if rainfall rates intensify.
