Marquette, MI – A powerful ice storm is expected to blanket Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with dangerous amounts of snow and ice through Sunday night, threatening widespread power outages and making travel nearly impossible.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, an Ice Storm Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. EDT Sunday for Marquette, Alger, Delta, Luce, Schoolcraft, Iron, Dickinson, and Menominee Counties. Northern Marquette County may see snowfall totals up to 12 inches, with ice accumulations reaching one-half inch.

Roads could become impassable as snow and sleet intensify overnight. The warning notes that the heaviest wintry mix will occur tonight into Sunday, with areas north of M-28 likely to see the most severe conditions. Downed trees and power lines are likely as ice builds up on surfaces.

Residents are advised to avoid all nonessential travel. Emergency kits should be kept in vehicles, including flashlights, food, and water. Authorities warn of extended power outages and advise preparing homes for loss of heat.

The storm’s impact spans much of the central and eastern Upper Peninsula, placing strain on emergency services and road crews already dealing with March’s late-season storm surge.
