Elkins, West Virginia – Temperatures dropping into the mid-30s overnight will bring a burst of frost across parts of eastern West Virginia, putting gardens and early-season crops at risk before sunrise Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday for Pocahontas and Randolph counties, including Elkins, Snowshoe, Marlinton, and Harman. Lows near 35 degrees will allow frost to form on exposed surfaces, especially in valleys and sheltered areas.
The coldest conditions are expected between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., when surfaces like vehicle roofs, grass, and rooftops can rapidly cool. While no travel disruptions are expected on major routes such as U.S. Route 219 or U.S. Route 250, drivers may notice patchy frost on bridges and elevated surfaces.
Gardeners and homeowners should cover or bring in sensitive plants Sunday night. Unprotected vegetation, especially newly planted flowers and crops, could suffer damage or be killed by the early morning chill. Pets and outdoor plumbing should also be checked as a precaution.
Temperatures will rebound quickly after 9 a.m., ending the frost threat. Additional advisories could be issued if clear skies persist into early Tuesday.
