Topeka, Kansas – Severe thunderstorms are expected to ramp up across eastern Kansas and northwest Missouri this afternoon, with damaging winds and large hail likely to disrupt travel and could cause scattered power outages through 7 p.m. Sunday.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for a large portion of the region, including Topeka, Manhattan, Lawrence, and the Kansas City metro. The watch covers more than 30 counties in Kansas and several in Missouri, including Jackson, Clay, Platte, and Buchanan counties.

Storms moving east will be capable of producing wind gusts between 55 and 70 mph and hail up to 1.75 inches in diameter. The highest risk window runs from early afternoon through early evening, especially along I-70, I-35, and I-29. Stronger cells may down tree limbs, damage vehicles, and lead to isolated power outages.

Drivers should expect sudden drops in visibility and debris on roadways. If you’re traveling, avoid unnecessary trips during peak storm activity. Residents should secure outdoor items and make sure phones and devices are fully charged.

The watch remains in effect until 7 p.m., with warnings expected as storms intensify. Additional areas could be added if the system continues to strengthen eastward.
