Salem, OR – An 18-year-old hiker who became lost in the Tumble Creek area was located safe late Monday night, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office reported that its Search and Rescue (SAR) Team began the response just after 9 p.m. Deputies stayed in communication with the hiker via iPhone while teams worked to reach the location. The individual did not require medical treatment, authorities said.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the incident serves as a reminder for residents to prepare carefully before heading outdoors. Officials recommend sharing your route and expected return time with family or friends, carrying essentials like food, water, a flashlight, and a first-aid kit, and ensuring a fully charged phone is available.
Authorities also urged hikers to wear sturdy footwear, dress in layers for changing conditions, and stay on marked trails to avoid the risk of becoming lost. Traveling with others and knowing one’s physical limits were also highlighted as key precautions.
By following these steps, officials say hikers can reduce risks and ensure a safer experience while exploring Marion County’s trails and natural areas.
The sheriff’s office provides additional information about its Search and Rescue program, including volunteer opportunities, on its official website.
