Indianapolis, IN – Two young children are recovering after police officers rushed into frigid water early Tuesday morning to rescue them from a submerged vehicle on the city’s east side.
According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, the incident happened around 12:03 a.m. Tuesday near a retention pond at 4000 Pendleton Way, close to the Lawrence area. Authorities said a vehicle driven by an adult male entered the pond and quickly submerged.
IMPD officers were first on scene and, without hesitation, entered the cold water to reach the vehicle. Police pulled three occupants from the car — one adult male and two juveniles — with assistance from City of Lawrence Police officers, who helped with rope bags during the rescue.
Fire officials said CPR was immediately started on both the adult and one of the children. Despite lifesaving efforts, the adult male did not survive. The two children were transported to Riley Hospital for Children, where they are listed in stable condition.
IMPD officers involved in the rescue were taken by EMS to Eskenazi Hospital as a precaution and are reported to be in good condition.
After the rescue, Indianapolis Fire Department divers conducted a secondary search of the pond to ensure no additional occupants were inside the vehicle. The car was later secured and removed by Garners Towing.
Authorities said it remains unclear why the vehicle entered the pond. The incident is under investigation by IMPD.
The rescue unfolded near residential areas in Marion County and drew a large emergency response, including fire crews, police, divers, and EMS units.
