Indianapolis, IN – Firefighters responded Tuesday afternoon after a rear deck collapsed at a home on the 1100 block of Newman Avenue, trapping two adults in wheelchairs beneath the fallen structure.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD), crews were dispatched at approximately 1:37 p.m. after receiving reports of an injury. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed that two individuals were trapped within the collapsed deck materials.

Both adults—one male and a 71-year-old female—were safely rescued after about 15 minutes of careful work by responding crews. Firefighters were able to extract the man first, while rescuers faced more difficulty freeing the woman and her wheelchair.

Emergency medical teams from Indianapolis EMS (IEMS) assisted on scene, placing the woman onto a backboard for precautionary transport. Fortunately, officials reported that neither individual sustained serious injuries.

The cause of the structural failure remains under investigation. Fire officials noted that it is unclear what led to the decking to give way.

Residents in the area were urged to ensure that exterior decks and porches are inspected regularly for signs of wear, especially in older homes.
