Indianapolis, IN – An argument over leftovers reportedly escalated into an armed robbery and assault Friday night, leading to the arrest of a 30-year-old man following an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigation.
According to IMPD, officers were called to Community North Hospital shortly after 8 p.m. Friday, January 9, after a robbery with injuries was reported. Investigators determined the incident had occurred earlier that evening in the 800 block of North Gray Street on Indianapolis’ north side.
Police said the victim told officers they had been involved in a verbal dispute earlier in the day with a known individual at a takeout restaurant. Later that evening, the confrontation allegedly escalated when the suspect assaulted the victim with a mini baseball bat and fired a shot in the victim’s direction. Investigators said the victim lost consciousness during the incident and later reported that their cellphone and keys were taken.
Robbery detectives identified the suspect as Davante Payne, 30, through investigative techniques and GPS monitoring tied to an unrelated case, according to police. Officers located Payne riding a bicycle on the city’s east side.
IMPD said officers believed Payne had a handgun visible in his coat pocket. While Payne initially complied with verbal commands, police reported he resisted as officers attempted to place him in handcuffs. Officers used a Taser to take Payne into custody.
A handgun believed to have been used in the robbery was recovered from Payne’s coat pocket, police said. Detectives later obtained a search warrant for the residence where the robbery allegedly occurred and reported finding additional evidence.
Payne was arrested on multiple preliminary charges, including armed robbery, kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and criminal recklessness.
An arrest is an accusation, not proof of guilt. Payne should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision.
