Indianapolis, IN – A felony warrant search led to an officer-involved shooting Thursday evening on the 900 block of North Grant Avenue, leaving a suspect hospitalized in critical condition, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).

IMPD detectives with the North District Violence Reduction Team and Violent Crimes Task Force were attempting to locate a man wanted for unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, robbery, and questioning in a child abuse investigation. Officers surrounded a detached garage just before 6 p.m., where the suspect was believed to be hiding.

According to police, the man initially walked toward officers with his hands raised but suddenly reached for his waistband and attempted to flee. Officers deployed a taser, and at least one officer discharged a firearm. The suspect fell after a short distance and was struck again when he allegedly reached for his waistband while on the ground.

Officers used a ballistic shield to safely take him into custody and provided medical aid. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. No bystanders were injured.

Police said no weapon was found on the suspect or in the area. Three officers discharged their firearms, and all were wearing activated body cameras at the time. They have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shooting cases.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, IMPD Critical Incident Response Team, and Internal Affairs are investigating. The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will hold a mandatory hearing after the criminal investigation concludes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Kyle Hoover at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
