Phoenix, Arizona – Air quality across Phoenix and parts of Southern California is expected to reach unhealthy levels Friday as state and regional officials issue pollution-related health alerts and wood-burning bans.

According to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), stagnant conditions are trapping fine particulate matter (PM-2.5) over the Phoenix Metro area, triggering a High Pollution Advisory. This pollutant can worsen asthma and heart disease, particularly in children, older adults, and those with respiratory issues. Officials recommend limiting outdoor activity and avoiding the use of fireplaces and gas-powered equipment.

Meanwhile, a mandatory No-Burn Day is also in effect for much of the South Coast Air Basin, including Orange County, the Inland Empire, and non-desert parts of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The South Coast Air Quality Management District is banning the use of wood, pellets, and manufactured logs in both indoor and outdoor fireplaces through midnight Friday.

Residents are urged to keep windows closed, use air purifiers or air conditioning systems, and avoid strenuous outdoor exercise until conditions improve.

Both advisories may extend into the weekend if weather patterns don’t shift. Residents should monitor air quality updates through ADEQ and South Coast AQMD websites.
