Phoenix, Arizona – A relentless wave of extreme heat is pushing temperatures in South-Central Arizona into dangerous territory today, with Phoenix expected to reach highs near 114°F, threatening a new record for early August. Emergency measures are in effect across Maricopa County as major heat risks grip the lower desert, raising the risk for heat-related illnesses and straining power grids.

According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in place through this evening for much of the Phoenix metro and surrounding communities. The agency has elevated the HeatRisk index to high-end Moderate and Major across the Valley, urging residents without reliable cooling to seek free transportation to area cooling centers between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Public health officials warn that prolonged exposure or strenuous activity outdoors from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. could quickly lead to heat exhaustion or worse.

Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Glendale, and Buckeye are all bracing for peak temperatures at or above 113°F, with little overnight relief expected. Essential safety tips include staying hydrated, wearing light-colored clothing, and checking on neighbors—especially the elderly or those without air conditioning.

The heat is projected to linger through Saturday before a modest dip in temperatures arrives. Additional advisories are possible if the pattern persists.
