Buffalo, N.Y. – Strong thunderstorms could bring damaging wind gusts across much of western and central New York Thursday afternoon, with peak threats expected between 1 and 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a marginal risk for severe weather is in place for areas south of major cities like Buffalo, Rochester, and Watertown. The storms may deliver isolated gusts exceeding 60 mph, particularly across the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, and into parts of central New York.
Cities including Jamestown, Wellsville, Geneva, and Fulton could see downed branches or power outages from the strongest cells. Commuters along I-90 and Route 17 should prepare for sudden visibility drops and debris on roadways. Outdoor plans this evening may need to be rescheduled, especially in areas with loose items or tents.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture, charge mobile devices, and stay weather-aware through the evening. While the storm threat remains limited in coverage, even brief wind surges could be hazardous.
The NWS will continue to monitor storm development. Additional advisories may be issued later today if conditions worsen.
