Gurnee, IL – Gurnee authorities are investigating a mysterious case involving the disappearance of manhole covers across the village. Residents have noticed a series of missing covers in streets and walkways, raising concerns about public safety.
According to the Gurnee Police Department, the manhole covers have been vanishing at a rapid pace, creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians and vehicles. The department is urging the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.
“While we work to keep the streets safe, please watch your step! Missing manhole covers can be a serious trip hazard, sending you into a deep hole,” a post from the Gurnee Police Department said. They advised residents to call 847-599-7000 immediately if they notice any missing covers or see anyone actively removing them.
Local authorities also reminded residents to be on the lookout for Village of Gurnee vehicles, as they are responsible for maintaining and replacing the covers safely.
The police have made it clear that anyone attempting to remove a manhole cover without authorization will be subject to investigation. The department is asking residents to provide as much detail as possible if they spot suspicious activity, including license plate numbers, vehicle descriptions, and the direction the culprits may be headed.
