New York, New York – A powerful winter storm could bury parts of the New York City metro area in up to 10 inches of snow by Monday afternoon, threatening both the Monday morning and evening commutes.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon for southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey and southeast New York. Forecasters say 6 to 10 inches of snow are possible across New York City, the Hudson Valley, Bergen and Passaic counties in New Jersey, and much of coastal Connecticut. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph, increasing the risk of blowing snow and downed tree limbs.
On Long Island, snowfall totals could climb higher. Suffolk County is under the same watch, with 10 to 13 inches possible and wind gusts up to 45 mph. Blizzard conditions are possible there, especially Sunday night into early Monday, where visibility could drop below a quarter mile at times.
Major roadways including I-95, the Long Island Expressway and the New York State Thruway could become snow-covered and hazardous. Wet, heavy snow combined with gusty winds may lead to scattered power outages across the region.
Residents should prepare now by charging devices, stocking essentials and limiting non-essential travel Sunday into Monday. Watches could be upgraded to warnings as confidence increases, with additional updates expected before daybreak Sunday.
