Chicago, IL – A federal judge has sentenced a Chicago man to 22 years in prison for a series of armed carjackings, including one that left a victim shot in the leg.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, Jamari Edwards, 23, of Chicago, carried out three carjackings in August 2022 in the West Englewood neighborhood. The first occurred at the drive-thru of a coffee shop, while the others took place outside a gas station convenience store.

Prosecutors said Edwards pointed a gun at each driver and demanded their car keys. In one instance, after the victim had already handed over the keys and exited the car, Edwards allegedly shot him in the leg and asked, “Why are you not scared?”

Edwards was arrested later in 2022 and remained in custody through his court proceedings. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to multiple federal carjacking and firearm charges. On September 4, 2025, U.S. District Judge Lindsay C. Jenkins sentenced him to 22 years in federal prison.

The case was investigated by the FBI’s Chicago Field Office and the Chicago Police Department. Authorities emphasized that violent crimes such as carjackings will be aggressively prosecuted.
