Carlsbad, N.M. – A magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck southeastern New Mexico Tuesday afternoon, with shaking centered about 23 miles east-southeast of Malaga in Eddy County.

According to the Texas Seismological Network, the quake hit at 11:13 a.m. local time at a depth of about 5 miles. While the tremor was relatively minor, at least one person reported feeling the shaking through the U.S. Geological Survey’s “Did You Feel It?” system. No damage or injuries were immediately reported.

Small earthquakes of this magnitude can be felt in rural communities across Eddy County and into nearby West Texas, though they rarely cause structural problems. The area has experienced scattered seismic activity in recent years, some linked to oil and gas operations in the Permian Basin.

Emergency officials in Eddy County urged residents to remain aware of earthquake safety practices, including securing heavy items, knowing safe interior spots to shelter, and keeping emergency kits on hand.

The Texas Seismological Network continues to monitor the event and review regional seismic activity. No aftershocks have been reported, but residents may feel additional minor tremors in the coming days.
