Cheyenne, WY – The US National Weather Service in Cheyenne has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Snowy and Sierra Madre Ranges, in effect from Thursday night through early Sunday morning, as a prolonged snow event is set to impact southern Wyoming’s mountains.
Forecasters warn of moderate to heavy snow, with total accumulations between 1 and 2 feet expected by Sunday morning. Wind gusts up to 65 mph will lead to blowing snow, whiteout conditions, and dangerously reduced visibility, especially at higher elevations and mountain passes.
The storm is expected to begin late Thursday evening, intensifying overnight and continuing through the weekend. Travel through mountain areas will be difficult to impossible, and outdoor recreation could become life-threatening for those not prepared for severe winter conditions.
Hikers, snowmobilers, and anyone planning mountain travel are urged to delay plans and monitor local forecasts. Frostbite and hypothermia are possible due to extreme wind chills and low visibility.
The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. Sunday. Conditions are expected to slowly improve by late Sunday as the storm system exits the region.
