Davenport, IA / Moline, IL – A powerful storm system will bring multiple weather hazards to eastern Iowa and western Illinois Sunday into Monday, including isolated severe thunderstorms, strong winds, rapidly falling temperatures, and blowing snow.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, the storm will begin with scattered thunderstorms Sunday afternoon, followed by a rapid change to snow Sunday evening as colder air surges into the region.

Sunday Afternoon: Strong Storms Possible

Storms may develop between noon and 7 PM Sunday along a cold front moving through the region.

  • Primary threat: Damaging wind gusts capable of downing tree limbs
  • Secondary threat: Hail up to quarter size
  • Tornado risk: Not expected in the Quad Cities forecast area

Sunday Evening: Rapid Weather Change

After the storms pass, rain will quickly transition to snow from west to east Sunday evening.

Temperatures will drop sharply from the 50s and 60s into the teens overnight, creating slick roads as precipitation freezes.

Sunday Night – Monday: Strong Winds and Blowing Snow

Strong northwest winds gusting 40 to 60 mph are expected from Sunday evening through Monday morning.

These winds combined with falling snow may create near-blizzard conditions, especially in open areas.

Snowfall Potential

Forecast probabilities show:

  • 4+ inches of snow possible across much of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois
  • Higher totals most likely north of the Quad Cities, including near Dubuque and northern Iowa counties

Snowfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour at times.

Travel Impacts

Conditions could become very dangerous for travel Sunday night into Monday morning due to:

  • Blowing and drifting snow
  • Reduced visibility
  • Rapid temperature drops causing icy roads

Officials advise residents to monitor forecast updates and consider adjusting travel plans ahead of the storm.
