Channahon, IL – Repairs on the I-55 bridge over the Des Plaines River in Channahon are set to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 3, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The $4 million project will replace expansion joints and install a new deck overlay, aiming to improve the bridge’s durability.

The work will require overnight and weekend lane closures on I-55 in both directions near the bridge. The lane closures will occur from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, and 9 p.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday. Despite the closures, at least one lane in each direction will remain open at all times.

IDOT advises drivers to expect delays and consider using alternate routes like Illinois 47 and Interstate 80 to bypass the work zone. Digital message boards will provide real-time traffic updates, helping drivers navigate the area more efficiently.

The project is expected to be completed by December. Motorists are urged to remain cautious, obey posted speed limits, and be mindful of workers and equipment in the area.
