CARIBOU, ME – Snow swirls in the headlights this morning across the North Woods of Maine, where gusty winds and steady snowfall are combining to create hazardous travel conditions. The air feels sharp — 22°F with wind chills in the low teens — as visibility drops along exposed highways and open fields.
The National Weather Service in Caribou continues its Winter Weather Advisory through early Friday, warning of 30–35 mph gusts and blowing snow across far northern and central Aroostook County. Localized whiteouts are possible, especially along Route 1 and I-95 north of Houlton, where open terrain allows drifting snow to pile across lanes.
Meteorologists say new snow accumulations will be light — around an inch — but blowing and drifting snow will make it feel worse. “It doesn’t take much snow when the wind picks up to cause visibility issues,” forecasters caution.
Conditions begin to improve by late Friday, but the cold deepens, with lows dipping into the single digits by Sunday night. The Arctic air will linger into early next week, keeping highs below freezing.
5-Day Outlook (Dec. 11–15):

- Sunday: Chance of snow showers, high 22°F, low 9°F.
- Monday: Partly cloudy, high 20°F.
