A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for parts of Maine as freezing rain and icy conditions are set to develop late Sunday into Monday. The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, warns of hazardous travel conditions across Central and Northern Maine, including areas along I-95. Drivers are urged to plan ahead, as roads are expected to become treacherous due to accumulating ice.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, freezing drizzle may begin as early as tonight, leading to light ice accumulation on untreated surfaces. The heaviest impacts, however, are forecast for Sunday night into Monday morning, with total ice accumulation of up to two-tenths of an inch in some areas. Regions like the St. John Valley are at the greatest risk of significant icing.

Temperatures will remain in the low 30s Sunday, accompanied by calm winds. Rain is expected to follow the freezing rain Monday, creating additional hazards as melted ice may refreeze overnight. Visibility could be limited in some areas, adding to driving challenges.

Looking ahead, a slight chance of snow and rain persists through Tuesday before conditions clear slightly by midweek. New Year’s Day is expected to bring warmer temperatures near 40°F, though scattered rain is likely to return.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and prepare for potential power outages due to ice-laden tree branches. Keep an emergency kit ready and avoid unnecessary travel during the advisory period. For detailed updates, visit weather.gov/car or check local broadcasts.
