Manchester, NH – Snow will begin falling by 1 p.m. Tuesday and quickly turn roads slick across New Hampshire and southwest Maine, with 3 to 5 inches piling up before 4 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at 1 p.m. for much of central, southern and northern New Hampshire along with interior and coastal York, Cumberland and Sagadahoc counties in Maine. Snow will overspread the region during the afternoon, intensifying through the evening commute. A light glaze of ice is also possible across southern New Hampshire, especially near the Massachusetts border.
Major routes including Interstate 93 from Concord to Manchester, I-95 from Portsmouth to Portland, and the Spaulding Turnpike toward Rochester could become snow-covered before sunset. Cities such as Nashua, Keene, Dover, Rochester, Laconia, Portsmouth, Portland, Biddeford and Saco are all in the advisory zone.
Even moderate snowfall rates can reduce visibility and create slippery conditions on untreated roads and bridges. Drivers should allow extra travel time, increase following distance and check NewEngland511.org for live road updates.
Snow tapers toward daybreak Wednesday, but plow crews may still be clearing secondary roads for the early commute. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall rates increase this evening.
