Caribou, ME – A powerful winter storm is set to bring snow, high winds, and hazardous conditions to much of Maine starting tonight. Travel disruptions, reduced visibility, and icy roads are expected to impact commutes through Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, snow will begin moving into the region late Wednesday evening, spreading across the state overnight. Snowfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected in Southern Piscataquis and Southeast Aroostook Counties, while higher elevations, such as near Mt. Katahdin, could see up to 18 inches. Winds gusting up to 40 mph may cause blowing snow, further complicating travel conditions on major routes like Interstate 95.

By Thursday morning, snowfall will transition to a wintry mix, with rain likely in coastal areas such as Bangor. Inland regions should prepare for icy conditions as temperatures drop sharply by Friday night. With single-digit lows expected, any wet surfaces will freeze, creating hazardous driving conditions into the weekend.

Residents are urged to finalize preparations for potential power outages caused by gusty winds. Secure outdoor items, charge devices, and have a backup heat source ready.

Looking ahead, conditions will improve by Saturday, with partly sunny skies and calmer winds. However, snow showers are possible Sunday afternoon, bringing minor accumulations. Stay informed by monitoring weather updates at weather.gov/car.
