CARIBOU, Maine – Damp leaves glisten under streetlights across Aroostook County early Monday as fog curls along Route 1 and steady drizzle lingers across northern Maine. The region begins the week under a gray, unsettled sky, and the rain looks to stick around through midweek before a cool, drier pattern finally takes hold.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, periods of rain and fog will move through Monday and Tuesday, with the heaviest rainfall expected late Tuesday night into Wednesday. Southerly winds gusting near 25 mph could reduce visibility along open stretches of Route 161 and U.S. 1, while patchy fog remains thick enough in valleys to slow the morning commute. Drivers should plan extra time and use low beams through midweek.

Tuesday brings a temporary lull with highs in the upper 50s, but another surge of moisture late in the day will trigger a wetter round of showers and patchy fog that lasts into Wednesday. By Thursday, colder and drier air will push in from Quebec, finally sweeping out the rain and bringing temperatures down toward the mid-30s by night. Rural areas west of Caribou could see their first light frost of the season by Friday morning.

Residents should check drainage areas, clear gutters, and secure outdoor items before winds pick up Tuesday night. The weekend ahead looks brighter, with partial sun returning and highs in the low 60s — a calm, classic late-October stretch after several damp days.
