Caribou, Maine – Northern and eastern Maine will enjoy one more day of dry summer weather Monday before a wetter pattern returns Tuesday night, bringing widespread rainfall, a chance of thunderstorms and the heaviest precipitation to Downeast communities through Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, overnight temperatures will fall into the 40s across western Maine and the 50s across eastern and Downeast Maine under continued breezy conditions. Monday will remain dry across the state before a low-pressure system approaches from the west Tuesday night.
Rain is expected to spread across northern and eastern Maine Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday. Forecasters expect 0.75 to 1.25 inches of rainfall across Downeast Maine, 0.75 to 1 inch across the Central Highlands, and 0.50 to 0.75 inch across northern Maine. There is also the potential for thunderstorms Tuesday night into Wednesday, which could produce locally heavier rainfall.
Communities including Caribou, Houlton, Presque Isle, Millinocket, Bangor, Ellsworth, Calais and Eastport should prepare for wet roads and reduced visibility during periods of heavier rain. Motorists should allow extra travel time and never drive through water-covered roadways.
While widespread flooding is not expected, the heavier rain across Downeast Maine could cause localized ponding in poor drainage areas. Residents should continue monitoring forecast updates as the storm system approaches, as rainfall totals and thunderstorm coverage may change over the next couple of days.
