Caribou, Maine – Maine will enjoy a stretch of mild, mostly sunny weather through the end of the week, but coastal residents are being warned to brace for dangerous surf as Hurricane Erin passes offshore. Highs inland will range from the mid-70s Thursday into the upper 70s Friday, with cooler nights dipping into the 40s.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, seas along the Downeast coast will steadily rise as Erin moves northeast in the Atlantic. Waves of 5 feet are expected Thursday, climbing to 8 feet Thursday night and peaking near 9 feet Friday into Friday evening. Forecasters urge residents and visitors to stay clear of rocks and beaches where strong waves could sweep people into the ocean.

Inland, the pattern remains much calmer with sunshine prevailing through the weekend. Highs will hover around 80 degrees both Saturday and Sunday, creating excellent conditions for fairs, festivals, and outdoor travel across northern and central Maine.

By early next week, a frontal system moving in from the west will bring a return of showers Monday into Tuesday.
