Caribou, ME – Northern Maine braces for dangerously cold conditions today, as frigid wind chills dip well below zero. Wind gusts up to 26 mph and low teens to single-digit temperatures make outdoor activity hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service, today’s high will only reach 13 degrees, with wind chills as low as -11. The bitter cold will continue tonight, with clear skies allowing lows to plummet near zero.

Monday will remain sunny but bitterly cold, with a high near 15 and wind chills hovering below zero during the morning. By late Monday night, a weak low-pressure system will approach the area, bringing a 50% chance of light snow. Early accumulations Tuesday morning could range from 1 to 2 inches, particularly Downeast, before tapering off by the afternoon.

Travelers heading along Route 1 or other key roadways should exercise caution during snow showers. Icy patches are likely to form overnight as temperatures dip to the single digits.

Looking ahead, Christmas Day in Caribou promises some relief, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 24. However, subfreezing conditions will persist into Thursday and Friday, when highs climb only into the upper 20s.

Residents should limit outdoor exposure, dress in layers, and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles. Stay informed with updated forecasts as conditions evolve.
