Maine – Wind lashes trees and power lines this morning as rain and fog lower visibility across southern and central Maine. Wet pavement shines under headlights, and gusts begin to push vehicles sideways on exposed roads.

According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. today for much of southern and western Maine, including the Portland and Gray areas. South winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected. Rainfall totals may reach up to one inch, increasing the risk of ponding on roads and minor river rises.

Drivers should use caution on I-95, I-295, Route 1, and Route 302, where strong crosswinds and wet conditions may cause sudden handling issues. High-profile vehicles face the greatest risk. Secure holiday decorations and outdoor items early, as scattered power outages remain possible through the afternoon.

As winds ease later today, temperatures begin to fall quickly. That drop matters. The National Weather Service warns that falling temperatures into the teens and 20s tonight could refreeze lingering moisture. Black ice may develop on untreated roads, bridges, and parking lots by early Saturday morning.

Saturday turns quieter but colder. Clouds increase, highs struggle into the mid-30s, and the winter feel returns. Sunday improves slightly with sunshine and highs near 42°F, though nights remain sharply cold.

Looking ahead to Christmas travel, meteorologists are tracking an early winter signal. Models now hint at snow likely Tuesday, with daytime temperatures near freezing. While totals remain uncertain, even light snow could slow travel during a busy holiday week.

Five-Day Outlook:

  • Saturday: Increasing clouds, high 36°F
  • Sunday: Mostly sunny, high 42°F
  • Monday: Sunny, colder, high 29°F
  • Tuesday: Snow possible, high 34°F
  • Wednesday: Partly sunny, high 36°F
