CARIBOU, Maine – A quick-hitting coastal storm will bring a mix of rain and wet snow to northern Maine late Wednesday into early Thursday, with slippery roads possible over the higher terrain. Light snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected across the north and central highlands, while Mount Katahdin and nearby peaks could see up to 6 inches by dawn.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, gusty northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts topping 40 mph, will follow the departing system late Wednesday night through Thursday. The strong winds may cause isolated tree limbs to fall and create rough travel on high-profile routes such as I-95 from Houlton to Bangor. Temperatures will fall sharply overnight, with lows in the low to mid-30s north and mid-30s Downeast.

Colder air lingers into Thursday, when highs will struggle to reach the mid-40s despite some clearing. Forecasters say the active fall pattern continues into the weekend, with more quick-moving systems expected. Rain may return Friday night into Saturday, changing to a wintry mix in northern zones before ending early Sunday.

Travelers are urged to slow down on wet or slushy roads, secure outdoor items ahead of the wind, and dress in layers for the chilly stretch ahead. While no major storms are expected, brisk winds could persist into early next week as another weak front approaches.
