Caribou, Maine – A widespread winter storm threat is expected to impact much of northern and central Maine on Monday, as a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through late Monday night for multiple regions.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, heavy mixed precipitation is possible, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain, across portions of the Central Highlands, Penobscot Valley, North Woods, Far Eastern Maine, and Aroostook County.

The watch covers a large area including Northern and Central Piscataquis, Northern and Central Penobscot, Northern Somerset, Northern Washington, Southeast Aroostook, and Northwest and Northeast Aroostook counties. Communities within the watch area include Presque Isle, Caribou, Fort Kent, Millinocket, Greenville, Lincoln, Dover-Foxcroft, Houlton, Madawaska, and Van Buren, among many others.

Forecasters warn that ice accumulation could lead to power outages and tree damage, while a wintry mix may create slippery and hazardous road conditions. Travel impacts are most likely during the Monday morning and evening commutes, when conditions could deteriorate rapidly.

The Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday morning through late Monday night, though start times may vary slightly by location across Aroostook County.

The National Weather Service advises residents to closely monitor forecast updates, as confidence in precipitation type and impacts will increase closer to the event. Watches may be upgraded to warnings if significant snow or ice accumulations become more likely.

For commuters, students, and workers across northern and central Maine, the developing storm may disrupt travel and daily activities throughout Monday.
