Caribou, ME – A winter storm is expected to bring northern Maine its first impactful snowfall of the season this weekend, with accumulating snow likely Saturday night through Sunday night. The National Weather Service in Caribou reports growing confidence that several inches of snow will fall across areas north of Katahdin, while locations farther south will see mostly rain.

According to forecasters, the exact storm track remains uncertain, and that will determine where the rain-to-snow transition occurs. A slight wobble north or south could shift the heaviest snow bands and alter amounts significantly, especially for communities near the dividing line.

Current projections show the highest likelihood of more than four inches of snow centered over northern Aroostook County and extending toward the international border. Meanwhile, central Maine—including Bangor and communities south of Katahdin—will mainly see rain with only limited wintry mixing at times.

Wind will also be a factor. Gusty conditions are expected Sunday, which may contribute to reduced visibility in falling snow and make travel more difficult in the northern part of the state. With this being the first winter storm of the season, the weather service urges travelers to plan ahead and exercise caution.

Hazards highlighted by the National Weather Service include accumulating snow, gusty winds, and challenging travel conditions in the storm’s core. While the highest impacts are expected in northern Maine, forecasters say confidence in exact timing and final totals remains low and will be refined as the system approaches.

The storm is expected to taper off late Sunday night, with lingering snow showers possible into early Monday.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as the rain–snow line tightens and snowfall projections become more precise.
