Portland, Maine – Bitter Arctic air is settling in across Maine and shows little sign of leaving as January turns into February, keeping the state locked in dangerous cold for weeks. Overnight lows this weekend are expected to plunge well below zero, with Portland staring at a low near negative 7 degrees Saturday morning, not factoring in wind chill, a level cold enough to freeze exposed skin quickly and strain heating systems statewide.
According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, long-range outlooks from late January through mid-February favor much below normal temperatures across the Northeast, with Maine solidly under the coldest air. This same Arctic pattern is driving subzero readings as far south as the Midwest and even South Texas at times, with parts of Minnesota facing life-threatening lows near negative 60 degrees.
Across Maine, the prolonged cold raises concerns for icy roads, frozen pipes, and power disruptions, especially during overnight and early morning hours. While the heaviest snow and ice risks this weekend focus farther south from Virginia into the Carolinas, Maine remains vulnerable to periodic light snow, blowing snow, and dangerous wind chills.
The big question is when a warm-up arrives. Current outlooks suggest the cold pattern holds into at least mid-February, with only brief moderation possible. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor exposure, check heating sources, and prepare for an extended stretch of extreme winter weather as additional advisories may follow.
