Portland, Maine – Windshield wipers scrape sleet while light snow taps against windows this morning, coating roads with a thin but dangerous mix of winter weather. Even treated pavement feels slick, and drivers are easing through intersections with caution as the day begins.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through midmorning across southern and central Maine and much of New Hampshire. Mixed precipitation includes snow, sleet, and pockets of freezing rain. Additional snow totals reach up to two inches, with localized ice glazing making travel hazardous.

In Maine, impacts stretch from Portland and Augusta inland through Lewiston and Waterville. In New Hampshire, slick conditions affect Manchester, Nashua, and surrounding towns. Bridges, untreated side streets, and on-ramps remain the biggest concern through late morning.

Conditions gradually improve as precipitation tapers and temperatures edge upward. Even so, lingering moisture may refreeze after sunset. To be fair, January sun can melt snow quickly, but that meltwater often turns icy once daylight fades.

Thursday brings a calmer break with brighter skies and highs climbing into the upper 30s and lower 40s. Fog may develop at night as temperatures dip into the 20s. By Friday, clouds increase and rain chances return, especially later in the day.

The weekend trends milder but wetter. Rain becomes more likely Saturday, with slick roads possible during heavier showers. Winter hazards ease, though visibility issues may return in fog-prone areas.

Slow down this morning and allow extra stopping distance. Check local road conditions before traveling. Meteorologists continue monitoring the broader pattern, and more Weather Alerts could follow.
